FAQ
What is a prune?
A prune is a dried plum. All prunes are plums but not all plums can be prunes. The California Prune (New Improved French) was created in the 19th Century from the La Petite d’Agen, a French plum variety that fully ripens on the tree without fermenting prior to harvesting.
What does a prune taste like?
Like a fine wine, a quality prune should have depth. Think fruity with notes of chocolate, honey, and caramel. Our prunes taste that way because we harvest them at peak ripeness when they’re at optimal Brix (aka sugar content). It takes a seasoned farmer to understand when to harvest. With over 100 years of experience under our boots, we time it just right.
Do you sell prunes in bulk?
Yes, this is our main business. As the largest organic prune grower and distributor, we are a global brand and have offices and warehouses in Poland and Korea. Please see this page for more information on the products we ship out of our USA headquarters.
Do you use preservatives in your organic prunes?
No preservatives are used in Taylor Brothers Farms Organic Prunes.
Do you offer international shipping for online orders?
At this time, we do not offer international shipping for online orders.
If you are an international company interested in wholesale product, please visit our wholesale page.
How long will it take for my online order to arrive?
You should receive your product(s) within 5-10 days of placing your order online. We pack them as you order them (nice and fresh!), so thank you for your patience as you wait to receive your order.
How should I store my personal order of prunes?
Here are a few guidelines to help your dried fruit last even longer:
- Store your prunes in a cool environment. The fridge, cool storage room, or even the freezer works.
- Once you receive your prunes, transfer them to a sealed bag or container to protect your fruit from excess moisture sneaking its way into your box.
- If you purchased a 5 lb. or 10 lb. box, it’s helpful to rotate your fruit in its container every few weeks.
Do you offer refunds on online orders?
We do not offer refunds. We only replace orders if the order was lost in the mail, incorrect, or damaged (please provide a photo).
Very rarely, a customer will be surprised by how firm our whole prunes are. Please note that because organic whole prunes are lower moisture than pitted prunes and they do contain the pit, they will be much firmer than pitted prunes. We will not offer a refund if you find that they are too chewy or firm, so please check out our pitted prunes if you're looking for a softer bite.
Are prunes safe to eat if pregnant?
Prunes can combat constipation and iron deficiency. They are often recommended to women as a nutritious snack during pregnancy. Over-eating prunes can cause unpleasant gastric disorders (like flatulence and bloating). Please consult your physician before adding prunes to your regular diet.
Are prunes safe to eat if diabetic?
Prunes are low-glycemic, meaning they do not spike blood sugar levels like other dried fruit. They are also high in soluble fiber, which slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach and, as a result, delays the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Harvard Medical School reports the glycemic index for one serving of unsweetened dried prunes (60 grams, or about six prunes) is 29. While prunes are low-glycemic, please consult your physician before adding prunes to your regular diet.
Why is there “white stuff” on my prunes?
A sugary substance sometimes appears as a deposition on the surface and under the skin of the fruit. This is known as “sugaring” and it’s safe to eat. To prevent sugaring, we recommend storing prunes in the fridge.
