Growing, the Natural Way
“Organic” means different things to different people. What does it mean at Taylor Brother Farms?
First, we feed the soil as well as we can, so that it strengthens our trees naturally.
Second, we use compost and cover crops for our fertilizer program with some minor mined elements to minimize water run-off and nitrogen leaching. Cover crops that flourish on the orchard floor help necessary organisms survive, replacing nitrogen in the soil, while protecting both the fine fruit and the land. Each spring, bees pollinate both the cover crops and the orchards, starting a new cycle of natural growth.
Third, we control the insect population through:
- Environmentally friendly natural & biological insecticides derived from natural and mined materials.
- “Good” insects that eat the “bad” ones.
Fourth, we carefully monitor the environment on an ongoing basis to spot any changes that might affect the orchards.
Thinking sustainable
Finally, as a sustainable business, we:
- Recycle many products, e.g. engine oil, batteries, paper, cardboard, metal, ink, plastic bottles, buckets, prune pits, tree prunings, tires, electrical equipment, wooden pallets, plastic bins, etc.
- Minimize the use of equipment to travel through the orchards, in order to reduce soil compaction and preserve fuel, thus lowering our greenhouse gas footprint.
- We have also installed solar panels at our processing plants in order to reduce our dependence on commercial power, which will also reduce our greenhouse gas footprint.
Community Involvement
We continue to stay involved in our community
- We sponsor over 6 educational scholarships including, the Farm Bureau scholarship, the Sutter Buttes Sunrise Rotary Club scholarship, the Yuba City Rotary Club scholarship, the Marysville scholarship, Max Stassi Fund, Franklin Elementary School Fund, and the Barry School Garden Fund,
- We also strive to give back to the environment and provide a safe haven for our feathered friends by making a duck pond habitat, and Owl nesting boxes.
