Men’s Health: “Prune Away Heart Disease”

August 16, 2009 – The August 2009 issue of Men’s Health cites Dr. Daniel Gallaher’s research on dried plums and heart disease which mainly showed that:

  • Dried plums may keep your arteries clear.
  • Dried plums contain flavonoids that may help protect your blood vessels.

The ground-breaking study – seemingly the first examining the effect of a fruit on atherosclerosis – suggested that eating dried plums slows the development of atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is presently the leading cause of death in our society.

“A Superfruit”

Dr. Gallaher co-presented his research with Dave Grotto at the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Exposition in Chicago.

Dave Grotto, RD, LDN, author of “101 Foods That Could Save Your Life,” put dried plums in the superfruit category “because of their unique health benefits and also because they’re super-affordable, delicious and fit easily into a busy lifestyle.”

The amount of dried plum powder shown to significantly reduce the area of atherosclerotic lesion was equivalent to 10 to 12 dried plums a day.
