Reader’s Digest: “The Best Fruit to Eat for Stronger Bones”
July 13, 2009 – Readers’ Digest reports that researcher Bahram Arjmandi, PhD, at Florida State University, Tallahassee, has conducted
animal studies revealing that dried plums can actually reverse bone loss.
“When you think of foods that keep bones strong, plums probably don’t make the list’” says the article.
“But recent studies suggest that Prunus domestica, the small, egg-shaped plum that’s dried into prunes, is the very best fruit for bone strengthening.”
Readers’ Digest says that besides being high in disease-fighting antioxidants, plums are a particularly good source of three nutrients that are important for bone health:
- Boron
- Potassium
- Vitamin K
Women in the recent study ate eight to ten dried plums a day, but researcher Arjmandi suggests that as few as three could provide skeleton-strengthening benefits.
