Dried Plums Make a Healthy, Satiating Snack–Study
May 15, 2009 – Scientists from San Diego State University striving to identify “satiating snack foods” have found that dried plums could be a more effective appetite suppressant than similarly sweet, low-fat cookie snacks.
Researchers reported that compared to low-fat cookies, dried plums:
- Provided a “significantly higher” feeling of fullness (satiety)
- Elicited lower levels of plasma glucose and insulin.
The research team also found that consistent consumption of dried plums, as opposed to commercially processed snacks:
- improved blood lipids
- improved diet quality
- eased bowel movements
According lead researcher Mark Kern, “about 87 per cent of women snack twice a day”.
The researchers presented the findings of their plum snack study at the 2009 Experimental Biology meeting in New Orleans.
