Sacramento, California – To kick off 2008, the California Dried Plum Board (CDPB) said it plans to educate the general public about the health benefits of California Dried Plums and raise awareness about achieving and maintaining good digestive health, so Americans may improve their overall health and well-being.
California Dried Plums provide micronutrients involved in bone metabolism, including potassium, vitamin K and boron. In addition, this nutrient-dense dried fruit is high in plant substances called polyphenols, which are strong antioxidants that may protect DNA against damage, decrease inflammation and prevent cancer.
“I encourage all Californians to learn more about the health benefits of California Dried Plums,” said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. “By combining this fruit’s nutritional benefits with a good diet, Californians will help protect their own health as well as keep our agricultural economy strong.”
“California Dried Plums are also a good choice for maintaining and achieving digestive health due to their unique combination of nutrients including soluble and insoluble fiber,” said Leo Treyzon, M.D., specializing in clinical nutrition and gastroenterology at University of California, Los Angeles.
California produces 99 percent of the dried plums grown in the U.S. and 60 percent of the world’s supply of dried plums.
